Le cyprès chauve est un arbre du sud-est des états-unis qui aime bien les marécages (comme ceux de la Louisiane). C'est surtout le seul cyprès et un des très rares conifères dont le feuillage d'abord roussit puis tombe à la fin de l'automne (d'où son nom).
